Babylon is back again with a can’t-miss October line-up of international artists. From jazz to electronica, these dynamic shows are sure to warm up the fall evenings.

October 5:  Masaaki Yoshida, otherwise known as Anchorsong, is a London by-way-of-Tokyo electronica producer, who has gained a reputation for his enthralling live shows in which he uses only a sampler and a keyboard. His show at Babylon will see him accompanied by two string players, adding to the special quality of the performance.

October 5:  Hidden Orchestra is a wildly talented group of musicians who know how to be sneaky. Their experimental jazz wanderings are infectiously rhythmic and gratifying, but listen closer and you’ll find multiple layers of skill holding up the musical framework.  Delving deep into hip-hop, drum n’ bass, and other genres, the band keep two drum sets on stage, accented by violin, keys, guitars, and a range of rotating instruments. Their 2010 album, “Night Walks,” was received extremely well by critics, and their visually pleasing live show is likewise highly anticipated to thrill crowds.

October 6: Portuguese singer Lura was born to parents from the Cape Verde Islands, and preserves the Islands’ unique musical heritage in her work. In addition to a compilation album, 2010’s Best of Lura, Lura has released five studio albums, from her debut Nha Vida (1996) to Eclipse (2009); of the latter album, Lura has said: “The variety in my music is inherent to the Cape Verde Islands. The musical traditions of Cape Verde are a beautiful blend not just of African music, but also of the music of Brazil, America, and Europe. But all my songs are rooted in traditional forms of music.” Lura’s upbeat, soulful, and surprisingly powerful voice has made her very popular with fans.

October 12:  Over the course of 15 years and 6 albums, Firewater have been mixing punk, world music, cabaret, ska, and jazz. Tod Ashley has remained the only constant band member since the group’s foundation, with a rotating lineup that currently features Oren Kaplan on guitar, Paul Wallfisch on piano, and Tamir Muskat on percussion.  Ashley’s gruff and raspy vocals add a layer of time-tested angst to their music, and the surprising sounds that often accompany him make for an interesting listen.

October 19: Beardyman is a London-based musician who is known for his ability to beat-box and his adept technological skills, notably looping and sampling vocals. Known for his sense of humor and theatricality during his live shows, make sure you catch his unique and bizarre talent.

October 20: Oldies But Goodies is a feel-good DJ party featuring Murat Beşer and Murat Abbas on the vinyls. The celebration cuts the best selection of pop, rock, R&B, new wave, electronic, latin, and hip-hop reaching back from the 70’s until today, accompanied by visuals from Engin Eraydın.

October 25: Australian-born rocker Mick Harvey has had an extensive musical career in the spotlight and is known for his collaborative projects with such famous names as Nick Cave and Tracy Pew. After achieving modest success in Australia, he relocated to England and in 2009 and left the band Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. In recent years, he has been focusing on his solo career, putting out two records of Serge Gainsbourg covers in English and working with artists like Anita Lane, Robert Forster, and PJ Harvey.

October 26: Serbian born DJ, singer, and electronica producer Nina Kraviz will come to Babylon to give a live show. Kraviz has earned attention for putting on Friday nights at Moscow’s Propaganda club and from her soft, understated beats. The night is sure to deliver for fans of the underground electronica scene.

October 31: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a talented, Chicago-based group consisting of the 8 sons of jazz musician Phil Cohran. Their set is made up entirely of horns and a drum set, and the group has earned a reputation for being able to captivate crowds with such a minimal instrumental arsenal.  They often delve in hip-hop, jazz, and funk genres, and all have been involved in music since a young age.
