The main artery of Istanbul nightlife runs through the streets of Beyoğlu, where people, like little blood cells, scramble through the cobblestoned passageways. Sometimes Beyoğlu has trouble breathing because one of its arteries is clogged, too many people trying to get to the same place, politely pushing through, until the scramble inevitably relaxes. The cells sometimes exchange winks at the bar, while the noise is championed with hand gestures asking for another drink from the overwhelmed tenders of the liquor.
If there is a heart pushing people to and fro, it must be represented by the ever-glowing red glow of Kasette, located on a side street leading away from Istiklal. A bit of an escape and a bit of its own contained chaos, the dead end alley hosts a dance party until 4am every night of the week, and it is surprisingly crowded every time. Even though there is a bar inside at the back of a rather small space, waiters constantly make rounds through the crowd outside, finding the thirsty and quenching their needs with another round or more.
As the DJ does his best with a mix of house beats thumping away and a giant fan blowing hair dos in the proper direction, raised hands make shadow puppets on the projection screen where little animated creatures dance away in thorough colors. To say that Kasette is a hipster bar would be too general, however those two guys in the corner who still have their Ray Bans on or the girl in a loose Ramones T-shirt give us cause to say so. When you do get tired you can catch your breath on the oversized pillows lining the walls. Asmalı Mescit Mahallesi, Korsan Çıkmazı 6, Beyoğlu; (0536) 415 8018
