Best Gardens for a Cool Drink

Talya Arditi / July 30, 2012

The best way to beat the summer heat in the city is by swimming in the city’s best pools and beaches, some would argue. Others, however, would argue that it’s by drinking their favorite drink in one of the best restaurant gardens in Istanbul. If you fall in the latter category, take a look at our list of Best Gardens to enjoy a cool drink in the summer heat:

White Mill: Several tables, couches, and a swing make up the relatively large garden of White Mill, where trees and greenery make you forget that you’re in fact in Cihangir. A crowd pleaser especially on weekend afternoons, this Cihangir hot spot is ideal for nibbles and drinks. They even serve international beers like Leffe. Susam Sokak No. 13, Cihangir; P: (0212) 292 28 95

Limonlu Bahçe: Much calmer and down-to-earth than Münferit from across the street, Limonlu Bahçe is a hidden gem in the middle of Galatasaray. The unassuming door and hallway followed by narrow steps may make you question where all this is headed. That’s why the quiet, soothing garden is always a nice surprise, even for those who are not first timers. Beer and nibbles will take you far far away. Yeniçarşı Caddesi No.98, Galatasaray; P: (0212) 252 10 94

Backyard: An Etiler hotspot, Backyard is an all-rounder, ideal for all occasions - breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner. Having a cool drink here in the afternoon is just another summer must. The garden is really unlike any other in Istanbul: full-blown Bosphorus view, lush grass, sun beds abound. Just order a cocktail and a complimentary dish, and enjoy. Bebeköy Sokak No. 1, Etiler; P: (0212) 287 15 00

Zencefil: Known for being one of the first and most established vegetarian restaurants, Zencefil also attracts those who love a calm getaway in the heart of Taksim. The outdoor seating area here is secured by trees, and gives the feeling of a quiet getaway. Several alcoholic beverages are on offer. We suggest their homemade lemonade – with a hint of vodka in it! Kurabiye Sokak No. 8, Beyoğlu; P: (0212) 243 82 34

Cafe Zanzibar: A favorite Sunday lunch venue on the Asian Side, Cafe Zanzibar features the ideal waterfront locale for good food and a glass of wine. Not as leafy as some would like it, but the garden is still green enough to attract large crowds, especially groups and families. Cemil Topuzlu Caddesi Köşk Sokak No. 112, Caddebostan; P: (0216) 385 64 30

Arkaoda: One of the most well-known Kadıköy bars, Arkaoda's garden is what attracts the crowds. This is the ideal spot to enjoy a bottle of cold beer in the afternoon. Kadife Sokak No. 18/A, Kadıköy; P: (0216) 418 02 77

Mabeyin: If rakı is your kind of drink, and you want to enjoy it before the sun goes down in a lush setting, head to Mabeyin on the Asian Side. If you’re hungry, enjoy their meats and kebabs. If the goal is to simply enjoy rakı, then just order beyaz penir (feta cheese) and melon and enjoy this epic combo. Eski Kısıklı Caddesi No.129, Altunizade; P: (0216) 422 55 80
