Istanbul's Two New Charcuteries: Anjel and Comedus

Feride Yalav / July 17, 2012

The word “charcuterie,” arrived from the original act and process of preserving meats before the hum and cold gust of the refrigerator was ever invented. Nowadays, it is the starting point for those who find the selection at their local supermarket rather insufficient. Focused on the special collection and sale of meat and cheese products, among others, Istanbul has seen the opening of two charcuteries that take pride on the procurement of the local and organic for those with a certain palatal sophistication.

Comedus is a small charcuterie that has also been open since May with products that all come from local farms chosen with a specific intention of quality. On offer behind another glass display are regional cheeses, olives, olive oil, and meats that can be chosen and taken away or tasted on the spot. If you can’t bear the ride home with your bag of goods, Comedus’ two small wooden tables represent the availability of a sit-down tasting, including freshly made sandwiches with your choice of ingredients. Anjel charcuterie opened its doors in the beginning of May in the Galata neighborhood and has been providing a special selection of meats and cheeses for Istanbul food enthusiasts. Behind the glass display are unique selections of smoked meat and fish such as trout or entrecote. The charcuterie also serves as a small restaurant where a full Turkish breakfast is on offer as well as home made jams and organic granola. For lunch, the changing menu revolves around freshly made olive oil dishes such as broad bean and artichoke spread. Anjel stands behind its products, which are all prepared in house and picked out by the owner herself who spends her Saturdays wandering the organic markets. If you are looking for a sit down or take away spot to taste the best that Turkey’s organic farms and markets have to offer, Anjel and Comedus are at your service bringing what no supermarket can.
