A third branch of Gallery Ilayda has recently opened in Karaköy, an emerging neighborhood for Istanbul’s art scene. Sergül Okay originally founded Gallery Ilayda in Ankara in 1992, and ten years later her daughter Ilayda Babacan opened a second branch in Istanbul. She marks the passing of another decade with the opening of a new two-story exhibition space in Karaköy.
Gallery Ilayda in Karaköy supports artists of any nationality and in any stage in their careers, who express an interest in process through their work. The new gallery aims to help young Turkish artists gain international acclaim through local exposure as well as participation in international art fairs and exhibitions. Providing consulting services to art collectors on both an individual and institutional scale, Gallery Ilayda facilitates the exchange of new art and new ideas among a broad audience.
As is apparent in the opening exhibition Themeless/Contactless 2, the gallery supports artists who are fluent in many media and have a fresh outlook on the potentiality of materials. This group exhibition comprises painting, sculpture, and installation work centering on formal and psychological exploration of contemporary life.
