Yastık by Rıfat Özbek
Yastık is the cumulative efforts of former fashion designer Rıfat Özbek and Erdal Karaman. After 30 years of working among some of London’s top fashion designers, Özbek left the scene and turned to cushions, hence the name of his shop, yastık (cushion in Turkish). And, as it suggests, Yastık is all about the pillows. Twice a year, Özbek and Karaman produce a new collection of cushions. The majority of their work consists of incorporating traditional ikat and suzani work into their production, methods of weaving and embroidery originating from Anatolia and central Asia. You’ll find an extraordinary variety of textiles from Anatolian silks to traditional Brazilian. The pair also integrates the new and the unconventional into their designs such as their lavender collection where pillows are stuffed with dried lavender.
With two stores, one in London and this Nişantaşı boutique, the items on display bring together designs from all over the world like African prints and English interior stripes. In fact, walking into the shop may feel a little more like walking into a gallery than a store. The walls are white and each shelf has its own backlighting, drawing attention to the patterns of each product. The shop also sells unique lighting fixtures, but the main pull is obviously the infinite possibility of cushion choice.
