A Wai Lou
It might be the deep frying, a pinch of sugar added to almost every dish, or the balanced carb-protein ratio that make Chinese food the unquestionable king of comfort food. However, if you like to step outside your comfort zone every now and then and try something different, head to A Wai Lou, a little eatery tucked in between apartment buildings in Ortaklar Mahallesi in Mecidiyeköy.
Run by a Fujianese couple, the place serves both the usual suspects—sweet and sour chicken—and many more interesting dishes, which are highly appreciated by their native Chinese guests. If you are looking for a treat, start with the classic hot and sour soup, then go for the Peking duck, cold cucumber salad and Sichuan-style spicy tofu. If you are not quite the adventurous type, there are many rice- and noodle-based classics that we all know and love, and they do not disappoint either. Portions are generous and meant for sharing, and they are very reasonably priced.
A Wai Lou has been around for more than a year now, but you might have missed it for two reasons: unimpressive storefront, which you might pass unknowingly if you live in the area, or the lack of delivery to your neighborhood if you are located far from Mecidiyeköy. Like many Asian eateries, this one clearly puts food before decoration, with a modest and seemingly unfinished interior. Ordering in is the first thing that comes to mind as far as service is concerned, but the menu on Yemeksepeti differs slightly from what you find at the restaurant. To enjoy everything on offer we recommend calling the restaurant directly or simply taking the trip—it is only a 15-minute walk from the Sisli/Mecidiyekoy metro station.
