This well-known seafood restaurant started life simply by selling fish from a boat on the Bosphorus shoreline in Yeniköy in 1998. From such humble beginnings Takanik now boasts 4 branches in the city and has a reputation for quality seafood dishes and a charming atmosphere. The Arnavutköy branch was the second to open in 2009. Fittingly, fishing boat paraphernalia decorates the dining room and there is a mural depicting the old Takanik boat-restaurant in action, as well as colorful jars of pickles and photos of notable customers.
Takanik's owner, Kaan Kayhan is of course a fish expert himself and has stuck with the traditions that have made his restaurant so popular. The fish are cleaned and filleted in Sarıyer and the vegetables come direct from Gebze. The menu manages to be both cheap and delicious and with no alcohol being served, the customer profile is more family oriented. Most meals here will start with a plate of pickles and the balık çorbası (fish soup), fried anchovies and balık böreği (pastry with fish) are all excellent warm starters.
For the main course, chose from the daily selection of fresh, seasonal fish which is cooked to perfection, just how you like it and in its simplest and most delicious form. For dessert the special homemade helva, created with melted tahini is a must try and tea and coffee are on the house as part of your meal. Indeed the pickles, olive oil and helva are so good that you can buy them and take them home to savor later.
