Kiss the Frog
In Istanbul, if a restaurant can make it through an entire season of operations, chances are it’s here to stay. We believe this is the case with Rumeli Hisarı’s Kiss the Frog. After a dose of initial scepticism following its opening more than a year ago, we decided to give it a try when it could no longer call itself a “work in progress.” And we’re glad we did, because the restaurant perfectly fills the niche for seafood that differs from the classic city balıkçı (fish restaurant).
Set up with comfy indoor and outdoor tables, this ideal all-day dining spot offers great variety. Starters, good for sharing, serve as alternative to the classic meze but could also act as grand salad portions at lunchtime should you like to keep a plate to yourself. Don’t be surprised to see dishes on the menu that will spark your curiosity: “acayip bi piyaz” (extraordinary bean salad) or “lahanalı nefis bir şey” (something delicious made of cabbage) are definitely worth a try. So are classic seafood dishes, such as moules frites, or international dishes with a local twist, like kuru fasulyeli (dried beans) vongole. New on the menu is crispy kadayıf with quince; a dessert to look forward to at the end of a rich meal. Thursday nights at Kiss the Frog feature live jazz music from 9pm.
