Bach Before and After’s formula – the timeless music of Bach in a novel setting somewhere in Istanbul – is clearly a successful one. The event continues this month with the Thomas Gabriel Trio, a German ensemble famous for its inventive synthesis of Bach and jazz. The trio – which has been playing together for more than three decades – consists of pianist Thomas Gabriel, double bass player Gunnar Polansky, and drummer Martin Klusmann, all three of whom met while studying together in Essen. The three will be playing a program of Bach works in the waiting room of the Sirkeci Train Station, where they gave a concert for the 2009 Bach Days concerts to great acclaim.
The complete program will consist of Bach’s Partita No. 2 in C Minor (BWV 826); his Choral Prelude (BWV 147/10); his Sonata for Flute and Keyboard in G Minor (BWV 1020); his Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (BWV 565); and his Concerto No. 1 for Keyboard and Strings in D Minor (BWV 1052).
As an added bonus, there will be participation by Turkish ney-player Kudsi Erguner, and French cello player Eric-Maria Couturier.
