The exhibition entitled Kilden Suretler (Images in Terracotta) at the Sadberk Hanım Museum in Sarıyer, features an extensive display of Greek and Roman clay figurines. These 182 figurines, selected from the museum’s collection of over 500 different items, are from a time period spanning more than half a millennium, and include all manner of different types: votive offerings, grave gifts, representations of gods and goddesses, characters from everyday life, masks, vessels, and plaques. Despite their age and often fragmentary condition, the works on display are marvellously lifelike. All are testament to the versatility of clay, a material which has been the source of artworks of great beauty and complexity both in antiquity and in our own times.
Fans of Greek and Roman art will not want to miss this exhibition, which is well-worth a trip to the Sadberk Hanım Museum’s beautiful waterside location in Sarıyer.
