Every child learning to play the piano has probably experimented with the pentatonic scale, which results from playing only the five black keys in every octave. This installation at Arter entitled Siyaha Özgürlük (Freedom to the Black), curated by Melih Fereli, contains an upright piano once belonging to 20th century Fluxus artist/musician George Maciunas, on which the white keys have long been nailed down and thus rendered unplayable. Visitors to the gallery will be able to view Maciunas’s unique instrument, as well as hear a 10-minute composition by electronic musician Erdem Helvacıoğlu, composed upon the black keys of Maciunas’s piano (as well as on the strings of the piano, which Helvacıoğlu struck with scissors, hammers, and other tools). Helvacıoğlu’s musical homage to Maciunas – which features a 16-speaker, Ambisonic B-format sound system – is the first in Arter’s Sound Art Projects series.
