This year marks the 75th anniversary of the death of painter Nazmi Ziya Güran, one of those chiefly responsible for bringing French Impressionism to Turkey. To mark this anniversary, there is currently an exhibition of Güran’s paintings entitled Işığın Ressamı (Painter of the Light) at the Rezan Has Museum. The pupil of Osman Hamdi Bey, and a member of Turkey’s “Generation of 1914,” Güran produced a body of work that brings to bear the technique of painters like Monet and Renoir upon the landscapes of his native Istanbul. Among the paintings and watercolors on display in this exhibition are scenes from idyllic Bosphorus neighborhoods like Küçüksu and Anadolu Hisarı; the painter’s self-portraits; stunningly colorful floral compositions; and even some scenes of Paris, where Güran studied before the First World War. Art-lovers, especially those who are interested in 19th and 20th century Turkish-French cultural interaction, will not want to miss this important exhibition.
