Hüseyin Rüstemoğlu’s new show at Galeri Artist Çukurcuma entitled Büyütmeyen Masallar (Unedifying Tales) is a continuation of his previous one, Uyutmayan Ninniler (Unsoothing Lullabies). The standard configurement of the human figures in Rüstemoğlu’s canvases – with their palette of grey, black, and coffee-stain brown – is the fetal position, or an approximation thereof; even those paintings that feature two human beings together position them back-to-back, to ensure the greatest possible degree of solipsistic isolation. While Rüstemoğlu’s tales may not be edifying – to children or adults – they are striking and arresting.
