The chief inspiration for Görkem Dikel’s exhibit entitled Bigger Than You, at Nişantaşı’s SODA Gallery, was the artist’s 2010 trip to the Sahara Desert, with its vast expanses of sand extending to a distant horizon. That’s not to say there’s anything drab or monochromatic about Dikel’s canvases, which often focus on the green of an oasis palm or the blue of a stream in which two bathers are wading. Nonetheless, the message provided by the title of this exhibit is clear: whatever and whoever you may be, Nature is Bigger Than You.
