Aslımay Altay Göney’s show entitled İstif (Piled Up), at Galatasaray’s Gallery Apel, features images of faceless human forms stacked into rows, sardine-fashion. In creating these works, Göney has apparently taken inspiration from the words of writer Gökhan Akçura, who has stated: “Our brain is a natural storage machine: it piles everything up from the moment we’re born...nothing is thrown away. It’s pressed together, sorted, put in order – piled up, in other words...for some this results in paranoia, for some, in genius...” Göney’s own images of human regimentation, while suggestive of claustrophobia, leave their ultimate interpretation up to the viewer.
