Currently one of Istanbul’s most unusual and interesting art spaces, Closet Circuit offers a creative environment in which to connect with like-minded people, share ideas, and shop for secondhand clothing.
Founded by 25-year-old social entrepreneur Ülkü Çağlayan, Closet Circuit prides itself as an organization that offers an underground space for creative eco-pioneers. Ülkü has now grown her business from a small jumble-sale set up to a thriving clothes store and arts space. The ethos of the company is to represent the possibility of change and promote conscious shopping over unconscious consumption through a range of quirky secondhand and vintage clothing, hats, jewelry, and shoes, as well as many other upcycled and recycled trinkets. Closet Circuit also hosts an array of inspiring projects including pop-up cafes, events, and contemporary art exhibitions.
Nestled among the trendy backstreets of Cihangir, the store’s décor and atmosphere are modern, serene, and immediately intriguing. Painted on the wall above the counter is the famous Gandhi quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Ülkü describes Closet Circuit as an artistic space where everyone is welcome to contribute ideas for development and encouraged to consider change as a tangible force worth harnessing. She urges people to use the venue as a community space, often providing snacks and refreshments downstairs in the shop and renting out the upstairs apartments to travellers.
Closet Circuit will be starting a regular open market in June this year called Ekopazar, which will have a strong emphasis on creating awareness about sustainable living and being self-sustainable via creative means, such as music, art, film, food, and activities. Ülkü hopes to utilize Closet Circuit’s ever-growing community to establish a platform for emerging ecologically conscious brands. And with an abundance of exciting new projects up her sleeve, including plans to found the first entirely ethical and sustainable clothing brand in Turkey, Closet Circuit is a brand to watch in the future.
