Mısır Apartmanı is the beautiful art nouveau-style neighbor of the Church of St. Anthony on Istiklal Street. Constructed on the foundations of the Trocadero Theatre in 1905, it has been home to many important names, including Cemal Kuntay and Mehmet Akif Ersoy (crucial members of the Turkish literary scene). Currently, the apartment building serves as Istanbul's not-so-secret art nucleus, housing many of the city's leading art galleries:
Founded in 2008, Galeri Zilberman mainly focuses on Turkish contemporary artists "who challenge the limits of their chosen medium," with the occasional spattering of important international work. It holds six to eight exhibitions per year, all of them accompanied by bespoke catalogues.
True to its name, Kat1 is a multi-purpose art space located on the first floor where works by Galeri Zilberman and Cda Projects artists are presented by appointment. The space can be transformed into a stage for artist talks, public events related to artistic research projects, and lecture performances.
Two architects, Ali Artun and Haldun Dostoğlu, founded Galeri Nev in Ankara in 1984. Within three years, another branch had been established in Maçka; since 2008 the gallery has held its current coveted spot. Galeri Nev began by featuring upcoming artists and continued with the core masters of Turkish contemporary art. It has represented Turkish art in important art platforms around the world and has featured several European, American, Japanese, and Canadian contemporary art pieces, as well as works from the likes of Picasso, Dali, Bonnard, and Dubuffet.
Nesrin Esirtgen Collection
The Nesrin Esirtgen Collection was founded in 2011 as a way for Ms. Esirtgen to develop her interest in art, share her vast compilation, and support contemporary artists in Turkey. In addition to periodical collection exhibitions, NEC hosts special events to cultivate national and international recognition of upcoming artists.
Founded in 1998, Pi Artworks is a contemporary art gallery that represents both Turkish and international artists. Directed by Yeşim Turanlı, who is also the co-founder of the Istanbul Art Museum Foundation, the gallery is the newest addition to the Mısır Apartmanı complex, with another branch in London.
