Sakıp Sabancı Museum’s latest exhibition Cobra: 1000 Days of Free Art is a collaborative, multi-media exhibition that celebrates one of the most liberating moments in European creative history. While post-WWII Europe was recovering from the ravages of war, a vibrant, avant-garde art movement was emerging in the continent’s northern capitals. The abstract style’s handle, Cobra, is an abbreviation of the cities where its devotees were clustered: Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

 
Some fifty items crafted between 1948 and 1951 are on loan from the collections of the Dutch Cobra Museum of Modern Art.  This is yet another cultural exchange facilitated by the ongoing celebration of 400th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and the Netherlands. Paintings, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, and jazz recordings all bear the hallmarks of the Cobra movement: abstraction, wild expressionism, and a sense of the unbounded. Well-known works include Karen Appel’s “Woman, Children and Animals,” a line-heavy, violent tableau.
